On Friday, Sept. 21, boys’ water polo participated in the first tournament of the season at Warren and Downey HS.

During the first game against Palm Springs HS, the team lost 7-9, but redeemed themselves with a win against La Mirada HS with a score of  14-12. The following games resulted in a loss against Crespi HS losing 7-13, but persevered in a win against El Rancho HS winning 9-7.

According to head coach Artem Gevorkyan, the team prepared extensively for the tournament.

“The team worked hard with offense and defense through game-like situations, like 6-on-5, which is man advantage disadvantage,” Gevorkyan said. “In regards to drills, they practiced ball-handling skills and shooting, which improved their technique.”

Despite their victories, captain David Perez (11) believes that the team’s dynamic can be improved.

“At this point of the season, the team needs to be more familiar with their plays,” Perez said. “Once we are more adjusted in knowing our plays and  teammates, the more our chemistry will build.”

In addition, goalie Christian Williams (11) describes the team’s plan for future games.

“One goal that we want to achieve is to have better communication skills so we can perform to the best of our ability.” Williams said.

The boys’ next game will be home against Baldwin Park on Oct. 1.
