Team Up for St. Jude cheered on runners at the Los Angeles Marathon on Mar. 18.
The 26-mile marathon stretched from Downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica Beach, raised funds for families in need and brought attention to important causes.
Members motivated runners and St. Jude Heroes, participants who raise money for families who struggle financially, by cheering and passing out water and snacks.
According to Vice President junior Sarina Liang, it is important to give back to the community in any way possible.
“By simply volunteering, we hope that [we were able to] bring attention to St. Jude’s charity for children with cancer and its goal of saving children for no monetary cost,” Liang says.
President senior Helen Chang believes that the event resulted in a success.
“All of the volunteers were able to have fun [while] experiencing something new,” Chang says. “[Many] of the participants were very thankful and appreciated our cheers.”
Sophomore Ashley Ko believes that the overall turnout is promising for the next event.
“[There was] a similar amount of volunteers [as usual], but we had our first male volunteer who attended, so that was very interesting and different this year. [Hopefully] more male volunteers will attend [more events] to [raise] awareness for important causes,” Ko says.
Team Up for St. Jude is currently planning for their upcoming St. Jude Spirit Week in April.
