On Saturday, Feb. 29, co-ed swim attended the pre-league relays at Northview HS.
The relays marked the beginning of an extremely successful season with the team taking first place in many of the events. Many of the girls achieved California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) qualifying times, in both the 200M and 4×100 free relays. Other swim teams who attended included San Dimas, Rowland, Covina, Northview and Baldwin Park HS. This is the first time the team swam together in competition, with the combination of returners and new athletes.
According to Sidney Wong (11), the team faced some obstacles but eventually overcame them through teamwork.
“It was hard to get everyone together at practice and it was the first meet so I [was not] expecting much,” Wong said. “But we actually qualified for CIF and I am very impressed and proud of how the team performed.”
Furthermore, Riley Jackson (10) worked hard to prepare for this race and had an enjoyable time with her teammates.
“I prepared for this race by being cautious by limiting how much I ate and practicing every day,” Jackson said. “Races are a fun time to hang out and bond with my team as I feel that we get closer.”
As stated by Kotone Okamura, (9) the race is a great first-time experience.
“My favorite part of the race when people were cheering us on on the opposite side of the pool,” Okamura said. “The cheering motivated me to swim faster which resulted in us getting first place in many events.”
Swim will compete against Baldwin Park HS on Tuesday, Mar. 10.
