The Science Olympiad team competed in the Mira Loma High School invitational held on Saturday, Jan. 6.

After taking tests, building models, and analyzing designs, the team placed 11th overall out of 30 teams at the competition. In addition, seniors David Song and Vivian Lu placed 3rd in the Write-it Do-it event, sophomore Toby Lee placed 4th in the Dynamic Planet event and sophomore Nathan Leung and junior Katie Kyan placed 5th in the Rocks and Minerals event.

The team prepared for its first invitational of the year all throughout first semester by staying after school multiple times a week to improve abilities.

Despite the invitational being held during winter break, Science Olympiad team members often met during break to study for the competition, working for at least four hours each meeting.

Team member sophomore Ashley Ko says that although the team did well as a group, students needed to improve on certain areas to achieve better results.

“Everyone should continue improving our notes [while studying] and learn from our mistakes on tests,” Ko said. “If we all prepared more for the invitational, we probably would have better results.”

Overall, captain junior Katie Kyan felt extremely proud of the effort exerted prior to the competition and sees the team continuing to excel in future events.

“[The team] did pretty well [at the competition]. Many strong teams who have competed at the national level attended the invitational, and we put in our best effort this time,” Kyan said.
