On Aug. 31, revisions for Glen A. Wilson HS’ COVID protocol and guidelines for coaches and athletes were put into effect.
Through an email sent out by Athletic Director and Boys’ Basketball Head Coach Willie Allen, it seems as though the foreseeable future of athletics on campus will be regulated by a strict set of precautionary measures. At the time of this article’s publication, the affected sports include badminton, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Consequently, little to no variation will be made apparent between indoor and outdoor sport guidelines.
At the heart of the new guidelines, lies both athlete and coach vaccination status. Effective immediately, those who are not FULLY vaccinated for COVID-19 will be required to test weekly in order to ensure the safety of all teams practicing on campus. As long as an individual has shown proof of full vaccination by either Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer or Moderna, then said individual will be exempt from weekly testing. The only exception made will be for those who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 90 days, and are as a result not at risk of transmission.
Youth sports leagues, team organizers and coaches alike will take on the responsibility of maintaining records of all athlete, staff, coach and volunteer vaccination status, as well as weekly COVID-19 testing compliance.
