Meet Our 2022 Mr. Wilson Candidates!

Jake Xie (12) – Mr. Engineering 

Why did you decide to participate in Mr. Wilson?

“I decided to participate in Mr. Wilson because I watched Mr. Wilson 2019, and it was really fun. I love expressing myself, and this is a great way to showcase who I am to the whole school.”

If you could take two other Mr. Wilson candidates with you to a deserted island, who would it be and why?

“Aldrich and Gio. It is simple; they are my best friends, and I know they will share the food with me.”

What does a perfect day look like to you?

“Every day is a perfect day.”

What is something you have always wanted to do?

“Skydiving.”

Who is your biggest inspiration?

“My biggest inspiration is Jesus. He is the only perfect person to ever live, and he also saved me.”

Elijah Tolosa (12) – Mr. Homecoming

What is an important lesson you have learned in your four years of high school?

“An important lesson I learned in my four years is that it is better to overestimate a task than to underestimate because life is better when the task seems easy rather than too hard.”

What is one thing you will miss and one thing you will not miss about high school?

“One thing I will miss about high school is seeing my friends nearly every day, but one thing I will not miss is the cafeteria food.”

What is your favorite genre of music/favorite artist?

“My favorite genre of music is rock, and my favorite artist is Of Monsters and Men.”

If you could go back in time, what would you tell your freshman self?

“If I could go back in time, I would tell freshman me to try more things and to not be too lazy or scared to volunteer or apply to something.”

Who would you like to give a shoutout to?

“I would like to give a shoutout to my friends and family because without them I would not be the person I am today.”

Cole Serrano (12) – Mr. Waterpolo 

Who is your biggest inspiration?

“My biggest inspiration is my mom; I love her very much.”

What is one thing you will and one thing you will not miss about high school?

“I will miss all the times I spent on sports teams, hanging out with my teammates and having fun together. However, I will not miss the math classes I took; it was my least favorite subject.”

If you could take two other Mr. Wilson candidates with you to a deserted island, who would it be and why?

“I would take Slade Mendoza and Oscar Navarrete. They are so funny together; they would be the best entertainment.”

What is a quality you have that you think will help you earn the title of Mr. Wilson?

“I think my experience on stages due to hosting rallies and performing will help me earn the title of Mr. Wilson.”

What is something you have always wanted to do?

“I have always wanted to surf in Hawaii.”

Oscar Navarrete (12) – Mr. Drama 

Who is your favorite Star Wars character and why?

“Darth Vader because he is one of the coolest Siths, and he got with Padme.”

What part of Mr. Wilson are you looking forward to the most?

“Just having fun with the guys.”

If you had two free plane tickets, who would you take and where would you go?

“I would take my girlfriend to Italy.”

What teacher or coach has made the most impact on you and why?

“Coach Fesseden because I just loved all of his workouts from cross country.”

What do you order from In-N-Out?

“The Usual ;).”

Josh Beltran (12) – Mr. Football

What is an important lesson you’ve learned in your four years of high school?

“A lesson I have learned is to not care what others think and to do what makes you happy.”

How does it feel to represent football and what does it mean to you?

“ I feel honored and special to be representing football. I know not many people have done this for football, so I hope I do good for them.”

What is your favorite genre of music/favorite artist?

“Rock and Pink Floyd/Bad Bunny.”

If you could go back in time, what would you tell your freshman self?

“I would tell my freshman self to make as many memories as possible and to participate in as many clubs, sports and school events as possible because it goes by fast.”

Which teacher or coach has made the biggest impact on you?

“Mrs. B and Coach Fesseden have always been there for me and gave me the best advice for high school both academically and athletically.”

Alex Huynh (12) – Mr. Wrestling

Who is your biggest inspiration?

“My father.”

Which teacher or coach has made the biggest impact on you?

“Ms. Lee, my math teacher from Cedarlane.”

If you could take two other Mr. Wilson candidates with you onto a deserted island, who would it be and why?

“If I could take two other Mr. Wilson candidates with me on a deserted island, it would be Gio and Elijiah as I get along with them the best and know how we could survive.”

What do you order from In-N-Out?

“Double Double combo.”

What does a perfect day look like to you?

“A perfect day for me would be a rainy day where I can stay inside and just relax at home.”

Jacobo Varela (12) – Mr. Biomed

Why did you decide to run for Mr. Wilson?

“The reason I am running for Mr. Wilson is because it seemed fun. Plus, it is our last year, so I want to make it the most memorable.”

What is your cure for hiccups?

“I usually drink water if I get hiccups.”

What is your funniest memory of the organization you are representing?

“The funniest memory I have from Biomed is when we did a pig dissection, and everyone was grossed out by the smell.”

If you were a pair of shoes, what type would you be?

“I would like Vans because they are my favorite shoes, plus I love to skate.”

How would you describe yourself in a word?

“I would describe myself as hardworking.”

Alex Castro (12) – Mr. Paw

What part of Mr. Wilson are you looking forward to the most?

“I’m looking forward to the opening dance, a way to showcase all the hard work we put in and the camaraderie all the candidates share.”

What makes you unique?

“The biggest thing that makes me unique is how I adapt to the people around me. It is easy for me to fit in. and I love making friends with a variety of people from different grades, interests and groups.”

If you could shop at one store for free, which one would you choose?

“Costco/Sam’s club because you would never run out of almost anything!”

What is one thing you want to do before you die?

“I want to travel the world to Wildlife Reserves around the world to experience what our world has to offer.”

What is an important lesson you have learned in your four years of high school?

“Everyone is fighting their own battles. Not all of them visible on the surface, and the best way to get along and grow your friendships is to be supportive. Learning how to be a good communicator is something you use your whole life and helps not just you but everyone you meet.”

Justin Huh (12) – Mr. Basketball 

Why did you decide to participate in Mr. Wilson?

“I decided to participate in Mr. Wilson because I wanted to create as many unforgettable memories as I can before high school comes to an end.”

What is your favorite food?

“My favorite food is Crunchy Sushi Rolls.”

What’s the best advice you have ever received?

“Before every high school basketball game, my dad would remind me of Nelson Mandela’s quote: “I never lose… I either win, or I learn.”’

How has basketball impacted your life?

“Most importantly, I learned that the true measure of a man is how he responds to adversity.”

Would you rather shoot spaghetti out your fingers, or sneeze meatballs?

“Shoot spaghetti out of my fingers, so I could be like Spiderman.”

Slade Mendoza (12) – Mr. ASB

What does the Associated Student Body mean to you?

“It means to be a part of a family that helps each other.”

If you were to choose, who would you choose for Mr. Wilson?

“I would choose any one of the other three guys in ASB. (Josh, Cole, or Justin) They all have a big heart and got what it takes.”

What would winning Mr. Wilson mean to you?

“Win or Lose. I would not mind. At the end of the day, it’s all for fun.”

What did you want to be when you grew up?

“A dream job of mine is an actor. I love watching movies and being a part of one would be great!”

Why did you decide to represent ASB?

“I chose to represent ASB because it is such a great extracurricular under the best advisor ever, Mrs.B.”

Aldrich Gwynne (12)- Mr. Track and Field

What is an important lesson you have learned in your four years of high school?

“The experiences are what matter the most. I know many people that spend these four years of their life working strictly on schoolwork, but it never pays off to deprive yourself of your social life. The happiest I’ve been is when I had a good school-life balance. Have fun!”

What is your favorite genre of music/favorite artist?

“My favorite artist is Mac Miller.”

What is your favorite fast food spot?

“My favorite fast food place is The Habit.”

Which teacher or coach has made the most impact on you and why?

“Coach Gomez and Coach Fesseden have equally made huge impacts in my life. Outside of running, they’ve taught me how to be a leader and how to thrive in any environment. I’ll always cherish the lessons they’ve taught me.”

What does a perfect day look like to you?

“A perfect day includes a nice cup of joe, biking and hanging out with friends!”

Ronald Lu (12) – Mr. Dance 

Who would you like to give a shoutout to?

“I would like to give a shoutout to Kenneth Zhao, Andrew Liu, Erin Tran and Sandra Pan for being the best backup dancers ever in my lipsync.”

If you won a million dollars, how would you use it?

“If I won a million dollars, I would pay for college, get a car and buy a house for my parents.”

What is your favorite high school memory?

“My favorite high school memory was going to San Diego for a choir trip in my freshman year.”

If you were to choose, who would you choose for Mr. Wilson?

“I am in the running for Mr. Wilson, and I am here to win.”

What part of the Mr. Wilson competition are you most excited about?

“I am most excited for the lip sync because we worked hard to make a dance for it.”
