Hot girl summer is officially over. Or is it?
Summer 2019 has definitely been a melting pot of some of the most iconic and viral memes of the season—and they are not stopping anytime soon.
Undoubtedly, one of the hottest rising trends of the season can be summed up in three words: hot girl summer.
Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few months, you probably know that the infamous phrase is structured around a bunch of girls being unapologetically themselves by having the best summer ever.
However, you may be asking, where did the term originally come from?
It all started with 5-foot-10 rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who refers to herself as “H-town hottie” or “Hot Girl Meg,” with her respective fans called the hotties. On Aug. 9, the hot girl summer trend reached new heights when Megan released her official theme song “Hot Girl Summer” featuring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign.
In essence, hot girl summer became widespread due to social media and and the massive amount of fan culture behind it.
Amidst the trend’s popularity, with it also came skepticism. People were beginning to question whether or not it was just another irrelevant social media phase that would ultimately last for a couple of weeks. However, fans proved critics wrong and continued to post, tweet and make videos on how they’re living it up all summer long. For them, hot girl summer was more than just a trend; it was a statement, for girls to be unapologetically themselves when having the best summer possible.
So the question is this: was hot girl summer just an overhyped summer phase, or is it a concept that can be embraced all-year round?
