HOSA triumphs at State Leadership Conference

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) attended their State Leadership Conference (SLC) during Mar. 22 to Apr. 10.

SLC allows students from different schools and districts in California to come together to compete while developing leadership skills and new knowledge. Additionally, students who placed from first to third place got to move on to the International Leadership Conference (ILC). From Wilson, Felicity Yu, Ellie Hung, Isabella Lam, Jennifer Yang, Joanne Wu, and Kelly Poon qualified to compete on an international level.

According to president sophomore Felicity Yu, as members gain more experience, they become less shy during these competitive events.

“Throughout this year’s conference and competitions, I felt that our members were slightly timid,” Yu said. “As a first-year chapter entering conferences and competitions with seasoned teams, it definitely was intimidating and affected our experience at these conferences. I hope our chapter as a whole will take more initiative and attend these events with confidence next year.”

Moreover, vice president sophomore Ellie Hung plans to prepare members who made it to ILC with whatever resources or advice necessary.

“[Our] HOSA chapter is invested in the success of our competitors and will do whatever it takes to secure the utmost preparation in them. Competitors are diligently reviewing competition rules and complete practice tests, which are significant aspects of the ILC preparation process,” Hung said.

Lastly, treasurer sophomore Nathan Lee learned in SLC that many other students were just as competitive as they were and sacrificed just as much as they did.

“HOSA SLC has participants ranging from all across the state of California and as a result of this many participants strive to advance to ILC,” Lee said. Through this experience, I learned that many others are facing the same struggles as me and that I am not the only one who wants to advance. We are all studying hours a week and making sacrifices to make it to ILC. With this in mind, I hope to become more motivated and continue to strive for advancement to ILC.”

HOSA’s next event will be ILC which will take place from Jun. 23 to Jun. 26.
