HOSA advances into ILC with astounding results

Glen A. Wilson’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) team won numerous awards at the State Leadership Conference (SLC) from Mar. 24 to Mar. 26 at the Long Beach Convention Center.

HOSA is a team led by Coach Jungsoo Han focusing on introducing students to many professions in the medical field.

The team left campus last Thursday in order to fully prepare for the long weekend of competitions. The conference includes HOSA members competing in their respective events, as well as other exhibits featuring many medical professions.

HOSA’s mental health committee leader Isabella Lam (11) shares her thoughts about Wilson’s results at the conference.

“I am extremely proud of our team,” she said. “For a second-year HOSA chapter, our team did extremely well. We had several people qualify for internationals and it was a great experience overall.”

In order to qualify for SLC, the HOSA members had to compete in the first round a month prior to the conference. Thankfully, the majority of the team placed high and progressed to the state level. From then on, members who placed high at state progressed to the international level.

Additionally, returning member Nathan Lee (11) competed at SLC in the Medical Math and Epidemiology events.

“Some memorable things about the trip was seeing other students from different chapters around California,” Lee said. “Exploring the career and college workshops was memorable as well.”

As this year being his second year returning to SLC, Lee has a few words he would like to share with future HOSA competitors.

“I would like to say to learn from previous mistakes and use it to do better,” Lee said. “The amount of work you do translates to your success.”

Moreover, freshman member Josephine Tsai shares her first-year experience at the competition participating in the Forensic Science event.

“SLC was pretty fun for me,” Tsai said. “I enjoyed spending time with my friends and it was overall a good experience for me as a freshman. It was also my first time going out on a trip with my friends.”

The HOSA team continues to cheer on their members advancing to the International Leadership Conference (ILC) on June 22. to June 25. in Nashville, Tennessee.
