Hacienda La Puente Unified School District (HLPUSD) extended its shutdown period through the end of the 2019-2020 school year on Apr. 2.
Amid the coronavirus lockdown, the district implemented several measures to promote distance learning and student welfare throughout the month of April.
To support its students, HLPUSD provides free breakfast and lunch to students at multiple locations for pickup. The district also made multiple online programs such as Classlink, Clever and Google Classroom accessible for communication between teachers and students.
According to a report made by HLPUSD Superintendent Annie Bui, the district plans to invest five million dollars for device distribution and spend $700,000 for hotspot availability.
In regards to grades, the HLPUSD district guidelines state that all high school students will receive credit for classes enrolled as of Mar. 13. Distance learning is not mandatory, but there are multiple resources for students who want to continue their education.
Essentially, counselor Megan Jara believes there are some complications that have arisen from not being able to meet with students directly.
“It has been a challenge trying to determine where the needs are; some students are struggling with just their day to day health and anxiety while others are worried about preparing for college admissions and next year’s classes,” Jara said. “We are trying to balance between providing enough information without overwhelming anyone.”
Additionally, sophomore Serena Yang hopes to take advantage of the educational opportunities provided to her.
“Through distance learning, I hope to be able to set a schedule for myself in times of uncertainty,” Yang said. “I enjoy how I am able to complete my homework in the comfort of my bed, but it can sometimes result in a lack of motivation to finish assignments.”
