Happy New Year! Students Reflect On Their Winter Break As They Return to School!

Derek Chen (12)

If you could describe your winter break in one word, what would it be and why?

“‘Recovering.’ I used this time to relax, have fun, and take a break from all the stress that school and college applications have brought me by spending time with friends, sleeping in, watching my favorite shows and playing video games.”

What memory from winter break would you want to keep for the rest of your life? How did it impact you?

“Spending the entire day with one of my friends [who I have not talked to in a while] was super enjoyable and something I will never forget. Even though our lives may be different, we still find ways to talk and spend time with each other.”

Were there any holidays that you took part in? If so, what were they?

“Yes. I just celebrated Christmas and New Year’s during break.”

What would you do if you were to have a day to yourself without having anything to worry about?

“I think I would do one of two things: I would like to either spend the day at a theme park for something exciting, but if I want to relax, I would stay at home listening to music, making playlists and doing some much needed reflecting.”

Samantha Tung (12)

What is something you did the most often during winter break?

“Mostly during break, I had basketball. During the first week, we had a basketball tournament for school, so we went to San Diego and got second place in our division. We got to room with our teammates and it was really fun. On our second week of winter break, we had more practices. Basically, my entire break was mainly basketball.”

How did you spend time with your family during break?

“We celebrated New Year’s with a party, and my cousins came over and I got to spend time with them. They live in San Diego, and I do not really get to see them much.”

What is something you look forward to now that everyone has returned to school?

“Something I look forward to is just finishing up my senior year. I am tired, I can not wait for college, and I just want to rest now. I feel like I have put in so much effort over the past years, and I am done. I am done with basketball, since I am not planning to play it in college. I look forward to getting another job, because the one I have right now I do not go to often. I do want to get a job at a restaurant that I go to often.”

If you were to relive your winter break, would you change anything about it? Why?

“”I would not want to change anything about it because basketball is such an important part of my life. I would have gone to the tournament in San Diego anyways without backing out of it. If I did not go, I would have been kicked off the team [that is what our coach said, I think]. So, I had to go and could not change anything about it, since our coach has plans for basketball. We have to follow his plans, even if it is pretty sudden, meaning we have to work out our schedules around his.”

Jiahao Hu (11)

When it comes to winter break, do you prefer staying inside or going outside? Why?

“I prefer going outside to touch some grass and get some sunlight, or go on a vacation. Remember: we are not living in quarantine anymore.”

Were there any traditions that you celebrated over the break? If so, what were they?

“I celebrated Christmas by spending it at church while serving as an audio member. This means that I get to control the microphones and stream the service.”

Describe the best parts of being on winter break.

“The best part of my winter break is when my friends and I got together to celebrate the end of the semester.”

How do you feel about going back to school?

“Although I love going on break, I [now] feel much more refreshed and ready to get back to work!”

 Emily Quon (11)

If you had a playlist for winter, what would it look like?

“If I had a winter playlist, I would have songs from mj apanay, keshi, CLUB BOYBND, and bixby.”

What are three things that are important to you, and how are they important?

“My family, friends, and my Riot Games account. My family will always be there for me and my friends will support me if I am going through hardships, so they mean a lot to me. My Riot Games account on the other hand…I have mixed emotions about it, but nevertheless, it is still important to me because it is my only source of entertainment (just kidding).”

Did you travel anywhere for winter break? Where did you go and what did you do?

“For my first week of winter break, I went to Las Vegas to celebrate Christmas with family and friends. At Vegas, I ate, explored, watched movies and bowled. I also went to Knott’s with some friends the day before school started, so that was fun.”

Describe the majority of your winter break in a sentence.

“I completely dehydrated my body in the first week of winter break and then tried to restore it the second.”

Ron Huang (10)

What is one thing you enjoyed about this winter break?

“During this winter break, I had the pleasure of watching Aquaman 2 at the movies, which was an enjoyable experience since I was able to spend time with my family, who are usually extremely busy. Personally though, I would not recommend it, since I basically slept through the entire movie.”

Who did you spend time with over the break, and how?

“I devoted quality time to my family by celebrating both Christmas and New Year’s together.”

Has there been anything that you find interesting? If so, name one thing that caught your interest.

“I found myself increasingly interested in economic growth and money investment, delving into these subjects to broaden my understanding.”

If you could go back and change one thing in your life, what would it be and why?

“If I could go back, I would advise my freshman self to appreciate the value of the little work I had, because I would never expect myself to type or read tens of thousands of words in a single week.”

Ximena Brown (10)

Was there anything special you did for winter break? If so, what made it special?

“I met up with some middle school friends over break. It was special because as someone who did not come from one of Wilson’s feeder schools, I do not get to see some of my closest friends at Wilson. It was an especially fun event because it was one of my friend’s birthdays, so we got to eat cake and play board games.”

Did you pick up any new hobbies over the break? What were they?

“I did not pick up any new hobbies, but I was able to devote time to old ones! I love playing video games, but with the hustle and bustle of school life, I do not usually get the time to sit down and play. Over break, I was able to complete most of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on my Nintendo 3DS. It is one of my favorite games, and I am super glad I was able to play over the break.”

Is there a song that describes how your break went? If so, what is it and why?

“The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars most accurately sums up my break. I spent most of the break staying at home, sleeping in, and indulging in hobbies. The song describes feeling lazy and putting responsibilities on hold to rest, which I could definitely relate to on the break.”

Did you find any new movies or TV shows that interested you? What were they, and how were they interesting?

“I watched the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show over the break. As someone who has loved the Percy Jackson books since elementary school, I loved seeing the story so near and dear to my heart be recreated on TV. Especially after so long without a successful faithful adaptation, I am grateful for the chance to see such a well executed show.”

Nathan Messina (9)

When you think of the word “winter”, what do you associate it with, and why?

“When I think of winter, a word I associate it with is aurora. The aurora borealis has always been a fascination for me and has always been a gorgeous and illustrious example of nature’s beauty for me. Last winter, I got the chance to see it in Iceland, and it was beautiful, monumental, and so important in my life.”

Describe the highlights of how you spent your winter break.

“As for highlights—a lot of time with friends. On New Year’s I celebrated with friends, and there were many times where I hung out with the friends and people I enjoy. Spending time with my family was a big highlight for me and I enjoyed it very much. Christmas was also a great experience, and so was Mexicans Tres Reyes day as well.”

What are three things in your life that you find important, and why?

“In my life, three things I find important are my mother, as she is the one person I love more than anyone else; my faith, as it keeps me together and happy and content with my life; and my friends, as they are the light of my life and my daily motivation.”

What is a goal that you have for yourself now that we have one semester left?

“My goal for this last semester at this point is to simply pass my classes. I hope I will have good grades in store for me now that I have experience in Wilson’s grading and curriculum. I push myself now, more than ever, to get good grades to finish this semester off on a positive note.”
