On Wednesday, Jan. 30, girls’ water polo suffered a loss against San Dimas HS with a score of 4-10.
This game signified the girls’ last game of league, finalizing their spot as second in league and advancing to California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). Underclassmen and parents planned a special night with gifts and awards to recognize seniors for their contributions.
According to captain Charley Jackson (12), girls prepared for this match by practicing important drills and setting a positive mindset.
“We prepared for this game by practicing plays we were going to run and mentally preparing ourselves,” Jackson said. “Our coach also wanted us to have fun and [visualize] our team being successful.”
Goalie Madeline Gaitan (12) believes the team needs to focus on communication and having confidence during practice and games.
“Our [main obstacle] during games is always our communication because it is important in running plays and knowing what our teammates are thinking,” Gaitan said. “From my point of view, the girls were not talking as much which [resulted in] fewer plays.”
Despite losing to their biggest competitors in the league, player Bella Villalobos (12) remains optimistic for the first round of CIF.
“Before CIF, I hope to be able to rely on my team, but to also be more confident during the game,” Villalobos said. “Overall, I just want to finish the season strong.”
Girls’ water polo will be competing in the first round of CIF which is yet to be determined.
