Glen A. Wilson’s girls’ tennis defeated Diamond Bar HS with a score of 14-4 on Sept. 20.
The Wildcats went undefeated in the preseason, giving them plenty of confidence to take on their Hacienda League competitors.
Head coach Martin Marquez shares some of his strongest takeaways from the match.
“We did well controlling the tempo, being aggressive and setting the determination of the match by looking for winning shots and making aces on serves,” Marquez said.
Moving forward, Marquez shares what the team needs to work on to execute his vision for the season.
“I would like my team to work on being more aggressive, keeping communication levels high, improving our footwork and switches and executing serves and return serves more consistently upon release,” Marquez said. “It all starts with working hard every day as a team and getting the job done. I have faith that working as a team will help us achieve our goal: winning a Division 3 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) title.”
Additionally, team captain Chloe Wu (12) shares how an addition to the coaching staff helped her and her team enter the match strong.
“Our new plyometrics coach has been really good about drilling our players,” Wu said. “We have been working a lot on volleys and ground strokes and have been really diligent on improving our weaknesses.”
Wu adds how Tuesday’s match was different from the team’s four preseason matches, but was nonetheless a satisfying start to the regular season.
“I had a little more stress from this match because there is a lot more weight on getting these wins,” Wu said. “However at Diamond Bar, I really felt that we put our training into action.”
Additionally, Emily Ing (11) explains how her third year on varsity has helped her progress up to this point.
“I have been improving steadily over the past two years, making adjustments in my techniques,” Ing said. “Now as an upperclassman, I have also started displaying more leadership by helping others with the sport and making sure our team stays organized.
Girls’ tennis will next take on Los Altos HS on the road on Sept. 27.
