Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) attended its annual Southern Section Leadership Conference (SSLC) at Valencia High School on Saturday, Feb. 22.
The event consisted of 19 schools such as Los Altos and Yorba Linda HS. Each chapter participated in multiple sessions of competitions ranging from objective tests to public speaking events in order to qualify for the State Leadership Conference (SLC). The team took home seventeen awards and fourteen members will be advancing to the SLC.
According to FBLA advisor Leo Chang, the conference allowed members to interact with students from other schools and expand their knowledge when preparing for competitions.
“SLC is a very [engaging] experience for the team as the conference enabled our members to spend time with one another and network with [members of different chapters]. Students were also given the opportunity to learn subjects that are usually outside of the school curriculum in order to study for the competition,” Chang said.
In addition, president senior Curtis Lee believes that although the team performed well at the conference, there are still a few areas they can improve on.
“I am very proud of our members as [the outcome] of the competition was definitely one of our best performances; however, [I believe] some improvements can be made on [our studying methods] as the state competition will prove to be more difficult than the section conference,” Lee said.
Moreover, sophomore Karsten Ma reminisces on the competition and looks forward to his next year in FBLA.
“I believe the competition went well as a lot of us placed this year,” Ma said. “[Overall], other than preparing for the competitions, my friends and I had a great time there. I [definitely] look forward to next year’s competitions and events.”
FBLA will compete in the State Leadership Conference at the Ontario Convention Center on Apr. 23 to Apr. 26.
