On Nov. 6, cross country attended the league finals at Bonelli Park in San Dimas.

Despite the numerous schools that attended the race, Wilson emerged victorious and received many awards and honors. Boys’ varsity placed first and girls’ varsity placed second in their respective division. In addition, Johnanthan Zavala placed first and Jonathan Pfeiffer placed third, leading them to advance to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).

According to captain Johnanthan Zavala (12) the role of captain is key to how the team performed in their race.

“The most important thing about being captain is to make sure that everyone is [practicing consistently] and putting the [time and effort] in,” Zavala said. “My expectations were to make league and to make history with my team.”

Despite the team’s initial difficulties, runner Nicole Tong (11) remained hopeful in the pursuit of overcoming them.

“[During league finals], we faced many difficulties since many of my teammates, including me, got injured before the race,” Tong said. “I expected us to [advance] to CIF, especially the boys and [hope] to do well in CIF and head to finals.”

Overall, runner Jake Xie (10) is proud of the team’s performance and is excited for the future ahead.

“I felt great after league finals because [we were] league champions and able to make it into CIF,” Xie said. “This is exciting because we have a very promising team and I [hope we can] make it to state this year.”

Cross country is heading to CIF Preliminaries at Riverside on Nov. 16.
