An insider on our freshmen’s first few weeks!

Melissa Zerquera (9)

What are you most looking forward to for the rest of your freshman year?

“I’m looking forward to volunteering, joining more clubs and meeting more people.”

What would you miss from middle school that isn’t here in high school?

“What I miss the most from middle school is my teachers. They [greatly] helped me with school and prepared me for high school.”

What were your experiences during your first six weeks?

“It was more stressful because I was not used to the [larger] workloads, [unlike middle school]. I was struggling with the constant tests and assignments every day, but I’m hoping to improve in the next grading period.”

What is your favorite hobby?

“My favorite hobby is to play idol games, which are apps that you can play rhythm-based games and collect cards. They’re usually mainly based on Japanese idols, but can also be based on other idols in general. My other hobbies are drawing and reading when I have the time.  I’ve also been getting addicted to Asian dramas like Meteor Garden.”

How were your first six weeks at a freshman?

“It was fun! I met a lot of new people, including my best friend, Kai. I met him during the two weeks of band camp, and we have stuck [together] ever since.”

What was the hardest part about transitioning to high school from middle school?

“I believe that the hardest part about going from middle school to high school is getting used to the scenery. Every day, I’m finding new areas and places that are at school.”

Did you join any clubs or extracurriculars?

“I did. I joined Film for a Cause, and it’s pretty fun! I joined because I wanted to meet more people and be a helping hand to people that are unaware of bad things.”

If you had the power to transform into any object or animal, what would it be?

I would turn into a cheetah because they are really fast, and then I could be able to work faster.”

What did you notice from high school that was different from middle school?

“There’s a lot more people, a bigger campus and everything is harder, especially math.”

What did you feel upon entering high school for the first time?

“I felt scared because it’s a new school with new people.”

What are your expectations for the rest of freshman year?

“I expect a lot of homework, [along with] more struggles and constant tests.”

Imagine you were a new color in a crayon box. What color would you be and why?

“I would be red because I’m angry all of the time.”

What would be the highlight of these few weeks?

“[A good highlight would be] marching band. We finished our field show after four months of working on the movements.”

Do you have any goals for the rest of your first year in high school?

“I would want to be a better marcher [in band]. If I am a good marcher, I would be able to become a section leader and maybe eventually a drum major.”

What do you like about high school?

“I like having a free period that I use to procrastinate by watching Netflix.”

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?

“I would just watch anime and play games all night.”

What are the major differences between middle school and high school?

“It’s a lot bigger; you can have classes with different grade levels.”

Which class is your favorite and why?

“I like [introduction to engineering] because we can use Computer-aided design (CAD) software on computers to design stuff and I find the subject interesting [in general].”

Have you gotten involved in any school activities?

“Band and Film for a Cause. [For band,] I enjoy [making] music and [playing] instruments, [and it gives me the opportunity to socialize] because of section bonding. For our first [Film for a Cause] meeting, we [played] some Kahoot, and I got to know a lot more people by [doing so].”

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

“Invisibility so I can sneak through class.”

What was the favorite part of your middle school that isn’t present at Glen A Wilson?

“Having a lot of spare time. I could do whatever I wanted after school in middle school, now [there is] more studying, more homework and less sleeping.”

What is something you like about Wilson?

“I like the media center because it is a cool [and] relaxing place. [I can hide] away from all my stress [there].”

What are your favorite things to do in your free time? Do you have any hobbies?

“What’s free time? Joking aside, I like playing on my phone if I have free time.  I am also helping to design a webpage for Code team. In [the] code team, we are separated into groups, where we make web pages [to] submit [to a competition].”

What are your feelings on the first six weeks of school?

“The first 6 weeks of school showed us freshmen how high school was going to be. They showed us the first impressions of the next four years and opened our eyes to [the future]. Last year was middle school, that was easy, but now it’s becoming closer and closer to real life.”

Can you describe some of the new people you have meet at Glen A Wilson?

“For my first few weeks at Wilson, I’ve definitely seen a lot more new personalities than I have seen at middle or elementary school. There were a lot of people in middle or elementary school who had the same general personality, as kids we had a closer mindset. [Now] there is a wide range of people.”

What are your plans in the future regarding school?

“My plans for the future are to further expand my mind [in regards to] mathematics, English, and learning more than one language; [anything that will] prepare me for life and college.”

If you could become one animal, what would it be and why?

“I would want to be a dog; more specifically, a coyote or wolf. They are always exploring the world and [travel] wherever [they want]. They are always on the prowl, they are always [present] everywhere, they go through life generally enjoying it. As man’s best friend, it will be an easier time than other animals.”

What was the hardest part of the transition from middle to high school?

“It was realizing that there are other people who have similar problems, [yet] no one cares. You are part of something so much bigger, and it is up to you to feel like a bigger role than you do. You can feel like you are nothing at this school, but if you try really hard you can be a massive part [of the school].”

What will you miss the most from middle school?

“The babying. In high school, you are not holding the hands of your teachers, your parents, or your friends. It is up to you to own up to yourself.”

Do you have any hobbies or interests you intend to pursue in high school?

“I would like to [eventually] become drum major or assistant drum major of band, which I am very invested in. [I am also interested in] cabinet positions in Debate and other clubs.”

If you had to watch one movie continuously for a week, what would it be?

“It would be Click because it is about pursuing one dream but it could be interfering with other things that are important to your life. You could want something very much but it might not live up to your expectations because you took advantage of the people that cared about you.”
